Seville: November 1st-3rd

With the company of fellow backpackers and friends from Calgary, Rebecca and Colin, we arrived in Seville after a scenic 4-hour train ride from Madrid and many card games of “Asshole and Presidents”. The four of us decided to travel together through Spain and go our separate ways afterwards until we meet again in Corfu, Greece, for the last week of our big Europe trip.

We really enjoyed Seville and what the city had to offer. Seville was the first city in Spain where we really noticed the locals taking advantage of their siesta. For most of the morning and throughout the evening, the city was always filled with noise, activity, drinking, laughing, and music; however, from 1 to 4 p.m. the streets would be empty and the city stayed quiet.

The narrow streets of Seville were fun for us to wander through. Most of them would lead to large open squares which were always packed with locals. We enjoyed taking walks on the boardwalk which were lined with palm trees and having picnics by the river. The famous bullfighting arena was located right next to the river and was a beautiful Spanish sight to see. Unfortunately, the bullfighting season just ended in October so we were unable to enter the arena and watch this particular Spanish tradition. We also came across the 3rd largest cathedral (behind St. Paul’s in London and St. Peter’s in the Vatican City) in the world in the city center which was an incredible structure. Right next to the cathedral was the medieval royal palace. Inside the palace’s courtyard were a number of orange trees.

For one of our evenings in Seville, we enjoyed pitchers of whisky sangria and a free flamenco performance at a crowded local bar. The flamenco show featured a female dancer, 2 guitarists and vocalists and a flute player. Although it was an amateur flamenco presentation, we enjoyed the passion and spirit these performers conveyed through this specific Spanish art form.

Overall, we really enjoyed our stay in Seville. The city’s character, art, people, sangria, architecture, streets and squares made Seville one of our favorite cities for Europe!

Next stop, Valencia (9-hour train ride)!!!
